Why twelve you ask? I have read this book a minimum of 12 times now. I will read it again. These books are my all time favorites and I pull them out again at the very most every other year. They never grow old and the pages can never be turned fast enough even though I know what happens next. The adventure is as good now (better mayhap) then it was the first time. Ka After reading this book I really am left wondering why so many people love the Dark Tower series. I've read a lot of Stephen King and the thing he generally does well, even in a mediocre book, is to have engaging characters and well-defined stakes that draw you into the plot. Both elements were missing in this one.OK, I'll admit that I read the Gunslinger probably over 30 years ago and did not like it and so I waited this long to give book 2 a chance. Maybe if I'd re-read book 1 I'd have a stronger sense of why the actions that take place in this book should matter to anyone, but there was no way I was going to re-read a book I didn't like in the first place. And in any event I think the plot was clear enough. Gotta somehow get 3 people from our world into the Gunslinger's post-apocalyptic world to prevent the big bad from doing big bad stuff, so that wasn't really the problem. The problem was I just didn't care.And good grief, all the stuff with Detta just made me want to tear my hair out. It was just so incredibly annoying and none of it made any sense.This is the worst Stephen King book I've read and I read the Tommyknockers.
