Book Stone of Tears Review :

I was excited to read this epic. First book Wizards First Rule was decent and had a strong foundation with lots of potential. Only got about a quarter through this book Stone of Tears and just stopped. The hero Richard I simply can't get into. At times he is way to wimpy and throw in the constant love affair between Richard and Kahlan. Enough already. Spoil alert I stopped when Richard decided to put on the collar for the Sisters of the Light. No way he puts that collar on after having the Agiel on.
This is a tough book to review. Aspects of Goodkind's writing are quite effective. The engaging cast of characters he first assembled in Wizard's First Rule is back in this sequel, and the uniqueness and quirky natures of some of those characters makes them inherently likeable. They are fun to read about, and it is the audience's rooting interest in them that makes the passage through 900 plus pages of plot feel a lot quicker than one might imagine. The characters, especially some of the supporting ones, demonstrate Goodkind's creative potential. It is the obvious existence of this potential that makes a lot of the rest of the novel so distressing and disappointing. Having created this inventive cast, Goodkind runs then through a plot that is brazenly plagiarized from Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. Over and over again throughout this novel, the incredibly vibrant fictional world created by Jordan is pillaged to provide the substance for Goodkind's novel. A compete listing of these transgressions would take too long to provide here, but here are some of the highlights. In this second book of the Sword of Truth series, Goodkind established that magic is divided into distinct male and female types, just as in Jordan's series. Male magic users are dangerous and can be driven mad or killed by their power. Same as Jordan. There is an order of female magic users who call one another Sisters. The order has been infiltrated by a subversive subgroup of evil women. Just like Jordan. Goodkind presents a country of highly deadly warriors who fight with their faces covered by veils. Same as Jordan. Goodkind even closely mimics some of Jordan's invented language. In WOT, the main character is a man foretold in prophecy who is called the Car'a'carn. Goodkind's character's prophecied title is the Carahin. In short, the theft of ideas from a competing fantasy series is so prolific throughout this novel that it becomes a heavy distraction from the parts of the novel that are original and engaging on their own merits. Also disturbing, and not in the way that I believe the author intended it to be, is this book's approach to sexuality, especially female sexuality. With only one very notable exception, sex in this book is violent, painful, and involuntary. The number of women whose rapes are referred to is literally incalculable. Only one significant female character is not either raped or nearly raped in the narrative, and although the language used to describe these events is not in itself vulgar or obscene, it is quite clear, and the author spends enough time lingering over these events that you might find yourself uncomfortably wondering in these scenes are more important to the author than they are to the plot. Finally, the Kindle edition of this text is riddled with errors. This seemed to become especially pronounced in the second half of the novel, in which it was harder to find a clean page than one with three or four obvious mistakes.
